Design Brief
General:
The home I plan to create is a modernized version of a hobbit hole from The Hobbit. The home itself will be built for a single family, suited for taller clients than its original counterpart, while still maintaining the rustic, cottage-like style of a traditional hobbit hole. The exterior finishes will be made from grass, stone, wood, beige plaster, and glass, to blend in with the surrounding hilly landscape, while the interior will be in light-colored wood, stone, and plaster to create an open light-filled space for living. Since this is a single family dwelling, there will be three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, as well as a large kitchen/dining space and living room. As a Hobbiton-must, it will also include an underground pantry to store all that extra food for guests (uninvited or not).
Site:
The landscape of the site will be in the sunny rolling farmlands of Waikato in New Zealand (a.k.a. The Shire). This will mean that much of the house will be embedded within and between hills, just like a hobbit hole. There will also be a garden and outdoor sitting space at the front of the house.
Budget:
The average cost of land per hectare in New Zealand is approximately $25,447, while the average house price in the Waikato region is a bit over $500,000.
